2.6.1297 Wenceslas II crowned King of Bohemia

The coronation of Wenceslas II squeezed the royal treasury. The festivities lasted several days and Prague welcomed thousands of distinguished guests. Instead of water, wine flowed from the city's fountains.

Preserved Roman mosaic

This year will again be rich in archaeological discoveries for Italy. A newly preserved Roman mosaic has been unearthed in the province of Verona, the second major find in May.

1.6.1421 The lords rejected Sigismund as king

At a meeting in Čáslav at the beginning of June 1421, the Bohemian and Moravian lords rejected Sigismund as king. At that time, preparations for the Second Crusade to Bohemia were already in full swing.

Mysterious Anglo-Saxon brooch

The British Museum examined an Anglo-Saxon brooch recovered by a metal detectorist in Norfolk. But experts have been unable to pinpoint its exact origins. It was found in a field where the owner had soil brought in.

30 May 1434 Battle of Lipan

The last great Hussite battle took place on 30 May 1434. Nearly two thousand people died at Lipany, including Prokop Holý. The result of the clash opened the way for Sigismund to the Czech throne.

28.5. 1884 Edv(u)ard Beneš is born

Edvard Benes was born Eduard. He changed his first name during his studies. His father owned a farm, which he kept expanding. He wanted his youngest son to be a shoemaker, but he chose another path.

USS Nevada

About 120 kilometres southwest of Pearl Harbor, underwater archaeologists have discovered the wreck of the legendary USS Nevada. It served in the US Navy for 35 years, eventually sinking after nuclear testing.

27 May 1942 Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich

Reinhard Heydrich was a fanatical Nazi and the third most important man in Hitler's Germany. He even had an SS-3 license plate on his Mercedes. He planned the liquidation of the Czech nation, instead he was himself liquidated on May 27, 1942 by a pair of assassins.

26.5. 1876 František Palacký died

The funeral of František Palacký was spoken of as the royal funeral and the grandest since the death of Charles IV. The "Father of the Nation" died on May 26, 1876.
