11th Infantry Regiment SAND

The 11th Infantry Regiment (Infanterieregiment Nr. 11) was one of the oldest infantry regiments of the Habsburg Army. The regiment was founded in 1629 and formed during the War of the Spanish Succession as one of the newly established infantry regiments of the monarchy. The regiment arrived in Písek in 1805, but only for a short time. The regiment was not permanently established there until 1853.

We are once again on the Russian front of the First World War. After the articles about Vladivostok and USAT Sherman I decided to write one more article to complete the story. As I have already mentioned, my grandfather, after arriving on the Eastern Front, survived the attack and massacre caused by the Don Cossacks and, seriously wounded, was taken to the village of Gornostayevka where he served for five long years on the farm of the Cossack Shimanovsky. Who were these fearsome warriors whose name inspired respect across Europe?

USAT Sherman - home halfway around the world - part two

Vladivostok, once a remote Russian city at the end of the world, became in the spring of 1921 the last refuge of thousands of our soldiers captured during the First World War on the Russian front. The people were still afraid of the Germans, so the hungry and exhausted soldiers got a dumpling there, a pancake elsewhere and some coffee...

DIVORCED MEZE - 70 years since the end of the first stage of collectivisation

A few days ago I was driving between Oslov and Vlastec in South Bohemia and my attention was drawn to a Stalinec crawler bulldozer standing by the roadside in a field. Looking behind it at the wide ploughed fields, the idea for an article on this topic flashed through my mind. My ancestors were farmers, my grandfather was a farmer and we still own a nice few acres of fields and meadows. Therefore, this topic is somehow close to my heart even though the consequences of this action were fatal.The ploughing up of meadows and copses is nowadays often associated with landscape ecology, and this intervention in the Czech landscape was clearly a serious intervention and it changed and irreversibly damaged the Czech landscape.
