He picked up a faint signal with his metal detector. Then he dug up a golden ‘potato’ worth millions

An Australian metal detectorist has found a gold nugget weighing 1,218 grams. It contains around 940 grams of pure gold, worth 2.3 million. However, its collector’s value could be much higher.

He found two Bronze Age hoards. They were 11 km apart, both from the same workshop

Polish metal detectorist Mariusz Stępień discovered a 3,000-year-old hoard in Scotland, for which he received 2.5 million crowns. Two years later, he found another Bronze Age hoard, including a unique copper ingot and casting moulds that correspond to the items from the first find.

New in-depth metal detector sets from Garrett and new (lower) prices

The quest for greater range has been around for as long as metal detectors themselves. As it happened, we recently had the opportunity to test the new Ultimáté coils from Detech, designed for the Apex and Vortex metal detectors.

A metal detectorist found two extremely rare Roman coins. One sold for nearly half a million

The denarii were discovered by a metal-detectorist in a field in the English county of Gloucestershire. They date from the reign of the usurper Carausius, who ruled for just seven years after proclaiming himself Emperor of Britain and part of Gaul. Both coins have now been auctioned for more than 600,000 crowns.

DWARF 3 – a small, clever telescope that offers incredible value for money

When the DWARF 3 appeared on the market, it caught our attention primarily because of its design. It was significantly smaller than most other smart telescopes, had two cameras and a very interesting technical design, yet its price made it accessible to a considerably wider audience of astronomy enthusiasts.

47 silver coins from the stolen Viking hoard have been returned. One arrived by post

A hoard of gold jewellery and silver coins dating from the late 9th century was discovered by two metal-detecting enthusiasts, who failed to report the find and sold off most of the items. Eleven years after the discovery, the museum managed to acquire some of the coins, which have now been declared a hoard.

The lost, thousand-year-old residence of Emperor Otto I is revealing new evidence

Archaeologists in Helft, Germany, have uncovered a new section of a long-lost 10th-century imperial residence. In addition to the remains of stone buildings, they have discovered, amongst other things, silver coins, rare jewellery, arrowheads, Slavic pottery and an almost intact bone flute.
