He was digging in his garden and found the largest Viking hoard in Denmark

A homeowner in Rebild, Denmark, was digging up the ground in preparation for building a terrace when he stumbled upon a huge treasure from the Viking Age. Silver coins, brooches, bracelets, chains, ingots and chopped-up silver weighing 18.5 kg. In terms of scale, it surpassed all previously known Viking silver hoards in the country. 

A young man working a part-time job discovered a treasure worth 220 million crowns

Whilst renovating a house in Dendermonde, Belgium, workers stumbled upon a huge hoard of gold. In the cellar, they discovered gold coins and ingots worth around 9 million euros. The treasure was first spotted by an 18-year-old temporary worker, who initially thought they were ordinary one-euro coins – until gold bars began to fall from the excavation site.

A treasure within a treasure. Rare lead ingots found in a Bronze Age hoard

A bronze hoard from the Late Bronze Age, dating from around 950–800 BC, was discovered near Dereham in Norfolk at the turn of 2019 and 2020.  The hoard includes three very rare lead ingots deliberately shaped into rectangular discs.

Czech tourists have discovered a 3,400-year-old Bronze Age treasure in Slovakia

Mr and Mrs Jans were walking towards the Tomášovský výhled viewpoint in the Slovak Paradise when they spotted a bronze object on a country lane that had been left exposed by a storm. Realising it might be a historical artefact, they contacted archaeologists. The archaeologists eventually uncovered 12 bronze objects dating from around 1 400 BC.

Metal detector find of Roman artefacts: a gold ring, a hoard of coins and a lead coffin

A rare Roman gold ring has been unveiled in Somerset, England, and has now been declared a treasure. In 2018, Kevin Minto found it using a metal detector near Ilminster, where, a year earlier, he had discovered 250 Roman coins and a grave containing a lead coffin.

Detectorist discovers amazing treasure trove of gold jewellery and bronze artefacts

An extraordinary set of massive gold neckpieces weighing 300 grams was found in Romania. Along with them were discovered 2 bronze axes, a bronze bracelet and a trio of miniature bicycles with bird decoration. The discovery changes the view of dating artefacts from between the Bronze and Iron Ages.

A prospector with a metal detector found a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age depot

A set of bronze jewellery from the Late Bronze Age was discovered at Wilschdorf near Dresden. Ronald Meißner, a certified associate of the Saxon State Office for Archaeology, found it using a metal detector.

Treasure of silver coins under the church floor

A treasure trove of over a thousand silver coins from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries was discovered in the Church of St. Andrew in Barczew, Poland. The coins were stored in a glazed ceramic cup; they filled it to the brim. It has now been presented in the Archdiocesan Museum of Warmia.

Stolen 2,400 year old golden helmet from Coțofenești found after a year

The Dutch and Romanian authorities have managed to track down one of the most valuable artefacts of the Dacia heritage. The golden helmet, an extremely rare part of Romania's national treasure, was stolen in a spectacular robbery of the Drenthe Museum in Assen, the Netherlands, where it had been temporarily loaned from Romania. Along with it, three gold bracelets were also stolen.
