A metal detectorist has found a hoard of silver thalers, including coins from the reign of Rudolf II.

A coin hoard dating from the late 16th century has been discovered beneath the Hungarian hill of Somló. The collection consists of silver thalers from various parts of Europe, including coins minted by Rudolf II, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. One of Rudolf’s coins helped archaeologists determine when the hoard was buried.

A treasure worth two houses. A jug full of medieval silver coins was found in Kolomna

During a rescue archaeological excavation in the historic centre of Kolomna, Russia, archaeologists came across an exceptionally well-preserved hoard of coins dating from the first half of the 15th century. Over 2,600 silver coins were hidden inside a ceramic jug. According to experts, this is the largest complete collection of Russian coins from this period.

Metal detectorists have discovered a hoard of Roman denarii and Dacian bracelets

On 26 July, metal detectorist Ioji Ștefan Cătălin, known by the nickname ‘The Treasure Hunter’, discovered a unique collection of Roman silver coins and Dacian jewellery near the Romanian village of Apostolache. Together with other members of his metal-detecting club, he duly handed the find over to the authorities and can look forward to a substantial financial reward.

The wreck of a Byzantine ship contained gold ornaments, jewellery, coins and a ring bearing the emperor’s image

Archaeologists off the Croatian island of Mljet are systematically excavating the wreck of a Byzantine ship dating from the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries. Among the ordinary cargo, they have discovered gold coins, gold belt fittings and a gold signet ring bearing the image of the emperor. It appears that someone from the highest echelons of the state or military administration was travelling on board.

A medieval papal bull instead of a Byzantine coin

A well-preserved circular object from a medieval layer in the centre of Tallinn resembled a Byzantine coin. It was only upon closer examination and the discovery of an inscription that it became clear that the archaeologists had found a papal seal from the early 14th century. This is the first papal bull to have been discovered during archaeological excavations in Estonia.

A Polish Excalibur? A metal detectorist has found a bronze sword standing upright

A bronze sword dating back approximately 2,700 years was discovered by a metal detectorist during a legal search in the woods near Gdańsk. The weapon was buried almost vertically and, according to archaeologists, may have been part of a sacrificial or other ritual.

He was just about to cast his lines when he spotted a 1,000-year-old sword

Fisherman Mirosław Tucholski arrived at his usual spot by the River Warta, not far from the Polish town of Wronki. He had just started setting up his tackle when he spotted a long iron object amongst the stones and sand. It turned out to be an 11th-century sword.

Detectorist discovers amazing treasure trove of gold jewellery and bronze artefacts

An extraordinary set of massive gold neckpieces weighing 300 grams was found in Romania. Along with them were discovered 2 bronze axes, a bronze bracelet and a trio of miniature bicycles with bird decoration. The discovery changes the view of dating artefacts from between the Bronze and Iron Ages.
